Private Bookings
I am available to teach in Schools, Guilds and private homes on most of the major traditional hand embroidery techniques. Here is some basic information that will give you an idea of how I work:
How Do I Teach?
As the majority of my teaching is based on 1:1 coaching, I need to see each student at least 3 times in each class, so the shorter the course, the fewer people I can have in a class.
1 day workshops
I provide everything packaged up into a professional-quality kit, complete with all materials/tools (except scissors and ring frames), instructions with text and diagrams/photos, colour photo of finished piece.
2 & 3 day workshops
I provide as a minimum:

Cancellations
I require a minimum of 14 days’ notice for cancellation of a course – less than 14 days’ notice and there is a 50% tuition fee cancellation charge. This is to cover my costs as I do the majority of the preparation work within the fortnight prior to the class running. More than 14 days and there is no cancellation fee charged.
- By demonstration to small numbers of students, either on a pre-prepared sampler, or most often on the piece the student is creating – others will gather around to watch as I demonstrate and explain. I do repeated demonstrations around the room on various pieces so everyone gets a good look. I offer to start anyone on a particular stitch if they wish me to
- By drawing explanatory diagrams on a whiteboard or flipchart
- By providing pre-prepared handouts with diagrams/explanatory text
- By showing ready-made worked samples of the technique being taught, plus good quality photographs of other examples
- For design sessions: by giving general advice to the group and then 1:1 help in finalising designs; by providing a large amount of inspirational material for those who haven’t brought enough/appropriate material of their own
- By giving clear instructions at the end of each class (if qppropriate) as to what students need to complete before the next class, and what they need to bring to the next class

Materials Costs
- Kits
These are packaged by me, by hand, so the cost is made up of ‘parts and labour’ – the more complex the kit (amount of materials, level of instructions, work required to pack etc), the higher the pack price. Mark-up on wholesale materials is based on straightforward retail rates. I always state if there will be an additional materials cost payable to me on the day of the class, when I supply initial class information to the course organiser. - Student materials
As part of the joining instructions, I outline what (if anything) students need to bring with them to the class; this is in addition to the ‘additional materials cost payable tutor’ outlined above and I do not specify how much each student will need to spend on materials they bring. This is because a student may already have some materials, or they may choose to purchase more/less expensive items.
